Urrbrae Agricultural High School’s motto is “Science with Practice” so what better way to celebrate National Science Week than by inviting primary students to come learn about how we do science at the Urrbrae Wetland, on the Urrbrae Farm and in our Science Labs.
Thursday 16th and Friday 17th of August saw approximately 500 year 1 - 7 students from Wandana Primary, Uraidla Primary, St Joseph School Tranmere, St Joseph School Kingswood, Highgate Primary, Immanuel Primary, Brahma Lodge Primary and Sheidow Park Primary School descend upon Urrbrae to participate in the two day National Science Week Kids Teaching Kids Event. These students participated in a range of workshop across the site.
Students from Urrbrae’s Environment Group developed and conducted a series of interactive workshops about:
- Native and Introduced Fish
- Aquatic Macroinvertebrates
- Wildlife of the Murray-Darling Basin
- Grey Box Woodland Habitats
- Stormwater Pollution
- Indigenous Cultures
- Water Quality
The year 10 students who are part of the Urrbrae Trails subject, conducted tours of Urrbrae farm where students learnt about agricultural science, farm and food production, while the year 8 students ran workshops in the science labs. These students conducted two investigations to determine the optimum angle that achieves the greatest horizontal range of a projectile and grew crystals via evaporation to determine the solutes in two mystery solutions.
On top of this everyone was treated to a lunch time science show in the Ag shed, by our fabulous Science Coordinator Ian “That’s Amazing” Reed, who wowed the audience with SCIENCE!
We cannot wait for 2019 Science Week!
