About the competition

Sponsored by the University of Sydney, the Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize encourages students to communicate a scientific concept in a way that is accessible and entertaining to the public while painlessly increasing their science knowledge or, as prize patrons Dr Karl and Adam Spencer like to say, "Learn something without even noticing". It is intended to support budding young scientists across the nation, who will be our future leaders in research, discovery and communication.

The 2022 theme is 'Change'.

Delivered as part of the prestigious Australian Museum Eureka Prizes, the competition supports budding young scientists across the nation, who will be our future leaders in research, discovery and communication.

Who can enter?

Entry is free and open to all primary and secondary school students studying in Australia, with students that are homeschooled in accordance with the relevant state or territory legislation also eligible to enter. Entries may be submitted by an individual or a team of up to six students.

Competition format

Students are required to make a two-minute film that focuses on a scientific concept, discovery or invention, or their own scientific hypothesis. Films may be in any language or have no dialogue at all, as long as non-English audio and key information have English subtitles. Judges will make their selection based on science communication skills and entertainment quality. Each student’s passion for their chosen topic and creativity in working with the theme, ‘Change’, will also be considered.

Prizes

There’s a prize pool of $10,000 to be shared between the finalists and their schools, and representatives from the finalist teams also win a trip to Sydney to attend the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes Award Ceremony.
