Kangaroo Island Community Education became a Science Active School in 2023 for their commitment and dedication to Science Education, and their involvement with and support of SASTA. 

 

  • SASTA Corporate member
  • Participate in the Oliphant Science Awards
  • Staff have participated in judging for OSA
  • Staff member has been a member of the OSA Committee since 2020
  • Staff have regularly attended SASTA conferences and workshops
  • Had a submission printed in the SASTA Journal, blog and newsletter

Staff Contributions & Achievements

  • Judging of the ASTA i3 Awards
  • Judging of the BHP Foundation and Australian Science and Engineering Foundation competition entries in for the past 3 years
  • KICE Staff have contributed to Year 10 Science units for the GeoScience Pathways Project publications
  • Staff moderating and marking Stage 2 Science subjects including Chemistry and Psychology
  • 2022-23 Passionately Curious Regional Teacher Award from ASTA

Insect Investigators Field Trip 2

 

Programs & Activities

  • We offer and run five Science subjects at Stage 1 and 2
  • Participated in the Insect Investigators Program in 2022. We found and named a new species of fly, Callipohora kicei. We’ve been invited to run the program again in 2024.
  • Community Connections with a wide variety of organisations to implement “real life” science and excursions including Primary Industries of South Australia, Department for Environment, Natural Resources Board
  • National Science Week activities – every year we run programs where senior students and teachers support students and teachers in Reception to Year 5 to run hands-on science activities.
  • Have encouraged students to attend both UniSA and Flinders Uni workshops - external experiences - Engineering and the Science Alive Program for Year 9&10 students. Have a sponsorship program for this every year.
  • Women in Science (STEM) breakfast – participated for the past 4 years, inspiring all students to go onto further study and careers in STEM
  • Several KICE students from 2017 onwards have been successful in winning the James Moore Memorial Prize in Palaeontology
