Get to know Diya!
How did you first get involved in OSA?
My journey with the Oliphant Science Awards began in Year 5 at Hillcrest Primary School. I have always loved science and was eager to get involved in science activities happening around Adelaide. That’s how I came across the STEM Squad at Greenacres Library, where I joined a group of friends who shared an interest in STEM. With guidance from our trainer, Robert, we worked on creative inventions and learnt new things together. One of my friends from this STEM Squad took part in the Oliphant Science Awards and shared their experience with me, inspiring me to participate the following year. My grandpa, a physics professor, also encouraged me and supported my passion for science.
Why do you participate?
As a STEM student at Norwood International High School, I was excited to participate in the Oliphant Science Awards because of my passion towards science and technology. I have always been curious about STEM and wanted to expand my learning beyond the classroom walls. This experience has taught me valuable skills like research, problem-solving, and communication. It has helped me better understand how science can tackle global issues and make a real difference.
My teachers at Norwood International High School have always encouraged and supported me. They helped me believe in myself and motivated me to take on new challenges. Besides science, I love extracurricular activities, including programming, coding, and robotics. I also enjoy spending my free time playing the piano. These activities help me grow and motivate me to do my best. I have always enjoyed being curious and creative, and OSA has been the perfect way to explore my passion even further.
What advice would you give to other OSA entrants?
My advice to OSA entrants is to aim high, continuously acquire knowledge, work hard, and show perseverance. This mindset inspires me to do my best and stay strong even when it gets challenging. Another advice I would give is to manage your time well and stay organised, as this makes the whole process smoother and more enjoyable. Remember, even small actions can make a big difference in the world. Stay curious, enjoy the journey, enjoy doing your work, and believe in yourself. You are capable of amazing things!
What is your favourite project that you have submitted?
My favourite projects were my science writing pieces. Over the last two years, I received first prize for my works in science writing, including Lunar Jaunt and The Importance of First Nations Medicine. Last year, I took on a challenge, a science inquiry project. It was an interesting experience, and I learnt a lot, especially about keeping a logbook for my research process. These activities help with my school projects and improve my skills for my assessments. Both science inquiry and writing led me to receive first place in the Young Scientist Award in 2024. Overall, the Oliphant Science Awards have been a great journey, and I have enjoyed every step.
