A Spectacular Science Week at East Marden Primary School

Science week at East Marden Primary school is always a fantastic week and 2026 was no exception!

We started our science week with an incursion led by Grahame Denton and his Amazing Bubble show! Students learned about surface tension, opacity and were blown away by the amazing displays including putting students and teachers inside the bubbles. This was a great way to start students thinking about the upcoming science week. 

During the week students were excited to participate in lunch time activities led by Mr Spence. They created hybrid animals and discussed their features, created lava lamps, and used forensic science techniques to solve the mystery of the stolen chocolate cake! 

The culmination of our science week was the Science Spectacular, which has been running at EMPS for three years now. The night was based around the theme Seeds of Science: Nurturing Science learning for all. 

This year we were joined by the amazing students and teachers from Charles Campbell College and Morialta High School. Students and staff from Charles Campbell brought in their STEM racing team 'Team Fusion' who are travelling to Singapore to compete in World Finals later this term, whilst their Science Prefects led students through a demonstration of extracting DNA from strawberries, whilst facilitating a nutrition themed escape room style challenge filled with messages to decode and puzzles to solve. Students from Morialta Secondary College brought in 3D printing projects, Bridge models and robotics projects which amazed and delighted our students, and showcased their STEM stretch and Da Vinci programs the school runs. Students and parents were amazed at the local programs on offer at our public high schools. 

Ignite VR came and demonstrated VR technologies and gaming to our awestruck students. They played games and immersed themselves in a virtual world while using VR headsets. 

Year 6 STEM leaders led activities in our Opal building, including seed ball making, grass heads, colour chromatography, cypher codes, catapults and hands on demonstrations by our schools Lego League and STEM clubs. Students made, created and explored science concepts in fun ways with their parents and friends.

Student work was highlighted with our schools Oliphant Science awards and the Year 1 Mary Anning Art competition entrants.

All of this was made possible through grants from The Australian Science Teachers Association and a generous donation of seeds and soil from Bunnings Windsor Gardens, and their activities coordinator Kaz.

We cannot wait to see where Science Week will take us next year, and how we can nurture our science learning in the future!
