Mozzie Monitors in Schools Professional Development: participating in citizen science in an education setting.

Mozzie Monitors has engaged members of the public across Australia to participate in mosquito surveillance. This model of Citizen Science can play an important role in environmental monitoring of biodiversity and health risks. The Mozzie Monitors in Schools project seeks to extend the existing Citizen Science activity into schools

We invite teachers to participate in a CPD session that will:

  • expand their knowledge of facilitate student participation in citizen science
  • prepare and equip them for leading class mosquito trapping and identification in the Mozzie Monitors program
  • Provide curriculum linked educational resources for in-class activities

Target year levels: These activities are best suited for upper-middle primary years but can be readily applied for classes in Years 1-10.

What we provide:

  • Background on the principles of citizen science in an educational setting
  • Training and activities about mosquitoes including mosquito life cycle and ecology, types of mosquito and mosquito-borne diseases
  • Teaching resource package, including Australian curriculum linked in-class activities.
  • A Mozzie Monitors ‘trap kit’ with everything needed to lead class collections of mosquitoes. You’ll be ready to participate in Mozzie Month in Term 1 2025.
